Adding & Editing Properties - Create Child Property

📌 Overview

Child properties allow you to represent hierarchical relationships between BLPUs.
For example:

• Parent (original BLPU): Little Bridge House

• Child: Cleopatra Wing

• Grandchild: Staff Annexe

This structure is common for sites such as converted houses, sheltered accommodation, or multi-building developments.

➕ Add a Child

1. Locate the parent property in the BW Properties tab, then select the LPI tab.

2. Click Add Child BLPU.

3. The editor will prompt you to click or snap at the required location on the map.

4. Add a symbol on the map, save the graphic and database record, then complete the BLPU details.

5. At the LPI details stage, add a SAON (Secondary Addressable Object Name), which is the child’s name.

6. The Parent UPRN field will be auto-populated after saving.

7. Save the LPI record.

✅ In the BW, a new Children tab will now appear in the property tree showing all child properties, their UPRNs, and the linked Parent UPRN.

Repeat this process to add more children as required.

👶 Add a Grandchild

1. Select the child record that you want to act as a new parent.

2. On the LPIs tab, select Add Child BLPU.

3. At the LPI Details stage, the PAON will show the new parent’s details, and the Parent UPRN will display automatically.

4. Save the record.

Example:

• Little Bridge House → Parent

• Cleopatra Wing → Child

• Staff Annexe → Grandchild

⚠️ More than three hierarchy levels are possible, but always follow Data Entry Conventions (correct PAON/SAON entries).

🔄 Alternative Method

You can also create a Child during new property creation:

1. Add a new BLPU using Add Symbol.

2. While adding the LPI, tick Child BLPU.

3. Select a Parent PAON from the dropdown (only properties with no SAONs will be listed).

4. The Parent UPRN will be automatically assigned.

⚖️ Logical Status and Child LPIs

• Alternative LPIs

  • You can only create a child with an Alternative LPI if there is already an Approved child LPI.

  • Attempting too early will return a ‘logical test failed’ message.

• Provisional LPIs

  • Child properties can only be created from Approved BLPUs.

  • For developing sites, first create independent LPIs during earlier stages.

  • When development reaches Approved status, edit the LPI:

    • Remove the PAON.

    • Add a SAON.

    • Select the Parent PAON from the dropdown.

    • This will establish the parent/child links.
