📌 Geocoding Ungeocoded Data
You may receive a dataset that is not geocoded—for example, a list of addresses without spatial coordinates. To use this data in a GIS, it must be geo-referenced or geocoded, which attaches spatial attributes to the records.
Within GGP, there is a mechanism to:
Import the data and display it as a list.
Select each record in turn.
Place a point symbol on the map to define its location.
For ‘Point’ type overlays, the geocode facility allows you to add symbols for each ungeocoded record.
Steps to Geocode Records:
Ensure the overlay is selected in the foreground.
Use the menu: Edit → Foreground Overlay → Geocode Points.
A list of records will appear. Select each record and geocode it by adding a corresponding point onto the map.
📥 Importing Data Already GeoCoded
If the dataset already contains coordinates, it can be imported directly. Points will be created automatically, provided the overlay has been set up with fields for the coordinates.
This method is commonly used for importing:
Published Ordnance Survey address products (e.g., AddressPoint)
NLPG data
Newer AddressBase products
Further information on these functions is available within GGP.
