After choosing a print template, the next step is defining the map area that will appear in your final output. GGP offers flexibility in how you select the map area—either by setting a scale or by manually drawing the area to be printed.
📏 Select the Scale
On the Print dialog, choose the map scale for your printout.
Select from preset scales, or
Use the User Specify box to enter a custom scale.
Area-Based Scale: Let GGP calculate the appropriate scale based on a user-defined area.
If you prefer to select the area first without worrying about scale, go to the Draw Area tab before clicking [Select Map Area].
Tip:
If 1:1250 is slightly too tight, try 1:1300 instead of jumping to 1:2500. This small adjustment may capture all required content while maintaining visual clarity.
⚠️ Be careful not to label the map as 1:1250 if the actual scale differs.
📐Selecting the Primary Map Area
Click [Select Map Area] to begin.
Your mouse pointer will change, indicating selection mode.
Left-click and drag to draw a selection box over the desired print area.
Release the mouse button when satisfied with the shape and size.
Move and position the box, then click once to capture the area.
🔍Tips:
Use the zoom tools while selecting the area to ensure visibility and accuracy.
If your selected scale causes the clipping box to disappear, zoom out to make it visible again.
🔄 Optional: Rotating the Map Area
If your map content requires rotation (e.g., to fit non-north-oriented features better):
Right-click and hold to enable rotation mode.
Rotate the selection box to the desired angle.
Release the right-click and position the rotated box.
Left-click to finalise selection.
🧩 Configuring the Inset Map
If your print template includes an Inset Map, use the Inset Map tab to define what appears in this secondary map window:
Go to the Inset Map tab to configure it.
Click [Select Inset Map Area] and select the inset map area using the same method as above.
Ratio Tab
The key difference is the Ratio tab, which lets you configure the scale relationship between the primary and inset maps:
🔎 Magnification – Make the inset a zoomed-in section of the main map.
🌍 Overview – Make the inset a zoomed-out context view of the main map.
Select the appropriate scale ratio to define the relationship.
👁️ Previewing the Inset Map
✅ Tick Preview Map Areas to view how the Inset Map fits in relation to the Primary Map before printing.
🧭 Rotation & Alignment
🖱️ After clicking [Select Inset Map Area], rotate the box using right-click and drag, just like with the primary map area.

🔒 If Align with Primary is checked:
❌ Rotation is disabled.
↩️ Inset Map inherits orientation from the Primary Map Area.
📦 Association Box Tools
Use the Association Box tools to create a visual link between the inset and the area it represents:
📏 Show Association Box – Adds a visible box on the primary map showing the inset extents.

🔗 Connect Association Box – Draws a connecting line or arrow between the inset and its associated area for better clarity.
